Ending Gerrymandering: Fair Maps Wisconsin: Doug Poland —Sunday Sept 22, 5:30

ENDING GERRYMANDERING FAIR MAPS WISCONSIN

Grass Roots Organization of Waunakee (GROW) and Middleton Action Team (MAT) and will host a talk on Gerrymandering on September 22 starting at 5:30 pm at Common Ground Restaurant, 2644 Branch St., Middleton.  A potluck dinner is provided at 5:30 pm. The speakers will be Dave Travis at 6 pm and Doug Poland at 6:30.

Support to end partisan gerrymandering is widespread in Wisconsin. A recent Marquette University Law School poll showed that 72% of Wisconsinites want to ban gerrymandering in Wisconsin including 63% of Republicans and 76% of independents.  Now is the time to take the job of drawing maps out of the hands of politicians and allowing a nonpartisan legal staff to draw the lines.

Our first speaker Dave Travis is a former State Representative from Madison and will provide a historical perspective of the issue. He served from

1979-2009 and during that worked with reapportionment of legislative districts several times. Prior to that he was Director of the Senate Democratic Caucus.

Our Main Speaker is Doug Poland. Poland co-lead on the trial counsel for the plaintiffs who successfully challenged the Wis. Assembly Legislative Districts before three-judge Federal panels in 2012 and 2016.  He was part of the legal team who represented the respondents before the U.S. Supreme Court in Gill v. Whitford, and he recently represented the plaintiffs in the remand of the case to the District Court on gerrymandering.  Doug earned a Juris Doctor summa cum laude from Loyola University Chicago School of Law.

He is a Member of Rathje Woodward LLC, and the founding member of the firm’s Madison office We hope you will join us.  A $5.00 charge will cover room fee.
